y'all didn't go through Hell Gate. That was just the northern tip of Roosevelt Island, off the coast of Gracie Mansion. There are often whitecaps there and they're pretty cool to play in (with larger groups) in kayaks. Indeed there are lots of whirlpools in this area immediately north of Roosevelt Island. It's hairy water, but as someone who has regularly canoed that stretch of water I can say with assurance that the area to the tip of Roosevelt Island is in NO WAY hairier than the real Hell Gate, which begins just below Randalls and extends up in the channel to the Sound that they discuss as "under that RR bridge and the Triborough." THAT narrow stretch of water has the most powerful currents and I don't think that their motor would get them through when the water is really flowing...in fact I'm fairly sure it wouldn't.

I went to Venice sometimes when I lived in southern California back in '89 and '90 and it still looks the same as it did then.There were street performers asking for donations,one guy played multi instruments and sang a Michael Jackson song and played bass with his toes I think and he was real good and my sister got her hair braided with multi colored thread by a hippie chick that had hairy pits.

Just know that my generation, young though we may be, really does appreciate everything you did, and what you sacrificed to do so.
